HDTV Televisions - Pros and Cons

HDTV televisions or High Definition televisions are very popular these days. In fact, you're probably planning to get one yourself. Before you buy one, though, it's a good idea to know the pros and cons of HDTVs first.
The main advantage of HDTV televisions is that they offer better picture quality, which is due to a number of reasons. For one, HDTVs have a better screen resolution, displaying up to more than 2 million pixels per image compared to the roughly 200,000 pixels per image of regular TV sets. High-definition TV's are widescreen, too, which accounts for a better aspect ratio.
High definition televisions are also equipped with progressive scanning, which results in a sharper picture. They eliminate ghost images or double images, as well, and even provide a better viewing angle so that you can see the images clearly no matter where you are seated in your living room.
The other main advantage of high definition televisions is the superior sound quality. This is because HDTVs do not just have digital audio signals. They come with 5.1 channels of Dolby Digital surround sound. Because of this, HDTVs usually come with six speakers which you can distribute throughout the room to help you recreate the theatre experience.
HDTV televisions have disadvantages, too, though, one of which is the fact that buying an HDTV alone is usually not enough for you to enjoy the full High Definition experience. For that, you'll have to buy other equipment, too, such as an HDMI cable, an HDTV tuner and a Blu-Ray player (which won the battle over HD DVD).
Finding content for your HDTV is difficult, too. While most satellite and cable TV providers offer HD content, you'll need to look for them or pay to subscribe to HD programming. If you're computer savvy, you can also find ways to get HD content on your PC by using some other devices, then learn how to connect your PC to your HDTV.
All these cost money, of course, which is the biggest drawback of HDTV televisions. An HDTV television alone ranges from $200 to as much as $3000, and its accessories are quite expensive, too. Blu-Ray players can cost up to $1000 while the discs cost about $25 for regular editions.
Still, if you have a lot of money and are willing to spend it, an HDTV should be a worthy purchase. In fact, the biggest con of HDTV televisions may be that once you sample the exceptional viewing experience they provide, you'll be spending more time glued to your screen.
